Winter travel and driving safety

Stay safe on the roads this winter

During the winter months, extreme weather conditions can make driving more difficult and potentially hazardous.

The RAC has plenty of tips and advice to help aid your winter driving and make your travels as safe and incident-free as possible this season — Winter driving advice | RAC Drive

Here are some quick tips to help you stay safe:

  • Check your car  make sure your vehicle is winter-ready with properly inflated tyres, topped-up antifreeze, and working lights
  • Pack an emergency kit — include blankets, a first-aid kit, de-icer, and snacks in case of breakdowns

  • Drive carefully — reduce your speed and leave extra space between you and other vehicles

  • Stay alert — listen out for local news bulletins to keep up-to-date with road closures, flooding and forecasts

In addition, it is always advisable to consider before you set off, whether your journey is essential.

If not, can it be delayed until after any bad weather has subsided?

If so, then plan your journey in advance, taking care to avoid areas which are prone to flooding, and factor in extra time to allow for slower speeds and potential congestion.

It is also a good idea to let relatives and friends know your intended route and expected time of arrival and where possible, travel with others.
