Know who to call for help
Not every winter illness needs medical attention, but it’s important to know when to seek help. Here’s a quick guide:
- Call 999: For life-threatening emergencies only, when someone is seriously injured or ill and their life may be at risk. For example, if someone is unconscious, not breathing or is bleeding heavily.
- NHS 111 online: For non-life-threatening emergencies, people can access appropriate care by visiting NHS 111 online.
- GP: If symptoms of cold, flu, or respiratory infections are prolonged, or if you have a chronic condition that’s getting worse.
- Pharmacy: For minor illnesses like coughs and colds, your local pharmacist can provide expert advice and over-the-counter remedies.
