Self-care at home

Self-care at home

Your winter first-aid kit

Make sure you have the essentials to manage minor ailments at home. Stock up on:

  • Pain relievers (e.g. paracetamol)

  • Cough syrup or throat lozenges

  • Thermometer

  • Basic first-aid supplies for cuts and bruises

Dealing with cold symptoms

Most colds will pass within a week. Get plenty of rest, stay hydrated, and consider taking over-the-counter medicines to ease symptoms.

Remember: antibiotics won’t help a cold or flu caused by a virus.

Further information and advice for colds can be found here.

Slips and Falls

Icy pavements increase the risk of falling, especially for older adults.

Keep walkways clear of ice and wear shoes with good grip.

If you do experience a minor injury, rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE) can help reduce swelling and pain.
